HEVO Takes Top 3 at ARPA-E

Submitted by Christian Okolski

March 21, 2013

The competition, hosted by Ultra Light Startups, consisted of a committee selection and an online crowd vote, with eight companies being selected to pitch at the final Pitching Session at the ARPA-E Summit.  With strong online support, HEVO reached the finals and earned top three honors out of nearly 300 competitors.  Sharing the winners’ stage with HEVO was BDL Water Technologies, developer of an innovative water recycling solution for oil and gas extraction processes, and Transatomic Power, developer of a more efficient and environmentally friendly nuclear reactor.

While in Washington D.C., HEVO also met with eight Congressional offices and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs in an effort to gain support for wireless charging, greater adoption of electric vehicles, and ultimately, U.S. energy independence.  As a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), HEVO’s innovative technology and impressive performance at the Future Energy Pitching Session has made it an encouraging success story for entrepreneurial veterans and the opportunities available to them while transitioning to civilian life.

HEVO plans to continue to be a strong supporter of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Center for Veteran Enterprise in its efforts to being a leading provider of veterans’ jobs.

HEVO Goes to ARPA-E in Washington D.C.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) will soon host what is arguably the Country’s most important annual energy technology conference.  The 4th ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit will extend from February 25th to the 27th and host prestigious speakers and industry experts like Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Elon Musk, and T. Boone Pickens.  Furthermore, the panel sessions, technology showcase, and networking opportunities will give attendees and presenters incredible access and exposure to innovative energy technologies and resources that have the potential to reshape our global energy future.   In fact, ARPA-E itself has directly invested in over 275 high-potential projects to propel energy technology innovation forward and into international markets clamoring for the “new” solution.

To expand ARPA-E’s efforts in funding innovative energy projects even further, February’s Energy Innovation Summit will feature the Future Energy Pitching Session, hosted by Ultra Light Startups.  At this two-hour session, eight tech startup companies will pitch to a panel of venture capital investors who provide real-time feedback, while Summit attendees vote for their favorite company.  Of the eight companies chosen to pitch at this exclusive event, two were selected by an international crowd vote. Dubbed the HEVOnation, determined supporters of HEVO Power voted en masse and accelerated the cleantech startup past 100 fierce competitors – advancing them as one of the top two most voted companies in a nose finishing competition.  HEVO will be the only startup pitching wireless charging for electric vehicles (EVs) and will compete against other high-profile companies like BDL Water Technologies, a company co-founded by retired Army General and 2004 presidential candidate, Wesley Clark.

Unprecedented exposure to investors, industry leaders, and government officials will help HEVO broaden its network and establish the relationships needed to transform our current EV charging infrastructure into a wireless future.  Furthermore, HEVO has been feeling the Power of its followers who rocketed them to the top in votes last Friday.  Spanning the globe, these supporters are hoping that wireless charging can provide the cure for the cord, while HEVO prepares to embark onto the global energy innovation stage.  As founder Jeremy McCool stated after HEVO advanced as a finalist, “On to the big show!”

Always hard at work, HEVO and partners have been busy this summer writing and submitting grants to the U.S. Department of Energy, and many other grant awarding organizations.  These alternative fuel grants are geared towards companies aiming to develop and commercialize wireless charging for electric vehicles. The DOE anticipates making their announcement by the end of September.

Submitted by Adrian Howe

May 23, 2012

HEVO became an official tenant and member of the NYC Accelerator for a Clean and Renewable Economy (NYC ACRE), which provides dedicated incubator space for aspiring clean tech companies.  Micah Kotch, the Director of the initiative, welcomed HEVO to participate as a member and tenant upon bidding farewell to the graduating companies of 2012.  New start ups and small companies are provided resources that may not be accessible in other circumstances, and are given two years to "graduate" from the incubator space.  HEVO, a New York based company, now has a new HQ to call home, and is proud to be part of the NYU Poly network.
